What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

PHP — sometimes called "day treatment" — is the highest level of outpatient addiction care defined by ASAM criteria. At 25–30 hours of structured treatment per week, PHP provides a clinical intensity comparable to inpatient programming without requiring you to stay overnight. It's the standard bridge between residential rehab and standard outpatient care — or the appropriate primary treatment level for those who have a stable, sober home to return to each evening.

PHP is not a comfortable compromise between "real" treatment and going home. It is intensive, structured care that requires full daily commitment. Participants are expected to attend consistently, engage actively in programming, and maintain sobriety outside of program hours.

Who Is PHP Appropriate For?

PHP is the right level of care when:

• You've completed medical detox and need intensive structure before stepping down to IOP
• You've completed inpatient rehab and need continued intensive support
• You have a stable, sober home to return to each evening
• You have moderate to severe addiction but don't require 24-hour medical monitoring
• A previous IOP attempt was insufficient — PHP provides more clinical hours per week

PHP is generally NOT appropriate if your home environment involves active drug use, unstable relationships, or lacks reliable recovery support. In those situations, inpatient rehab — which provides 24/7 environmental structure — is the correct placement.

The PHP-to-IOP Step-Down

PHP is almost always followed by a step-down to IOP. After 2–4 weeks of PHP, patients who demonstrate clinical stability — consistent attendance, engagement in therapy, sobriety maintenance — typically transition to IOP (9–15 hours/week). This graduated reduction in structure mirrors how clinical stability actually develops: progressively less external support as internal coping skills grow stronger.
